About the DAAD

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) stands as the biggest organization in Germany that supports international academic partnerships, making it the top scholarship provider for foreign students who want to study in Germany. Each year, it supports around 150,000 scholars.

This organization is privately run but gets its financial support from the German federal government. It offers a wide variety of scholarships and financial aids specifically for students from other countries who are planning to pursue their education in Germany.

It represents a group of German universities and student bodies, working together to promote the global presence of German higher education. The DAAD does not follow any political or ideological beliefs.

If you are planning to study in Germany and need financial help, the DAAD should be the first place you look. It provides scholarships for students at different education stages, whether you want to go for a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.

Generally, getting a scholarship for a bachelor’s program is more difficult. Moreover, the DAAD has special scholarships depending on your area of study, like programs made for artists or musicians, and some are based on your country of origin.

The 2025 DAAD Doctoral Scholarships

DAAD Doctoral Scholarships mainly support postdoctoral researchers by helping them study or carry out research at universities or other research centers in Germany. Some of the programmes also offer support for internships.

Recipients of DAAD scholarships do not need to repay the funds. These scholarships usually include a monthly financial support (for instance, €1,300 for doctoral students) along with a fixed amount for travel expenses.

Goal of the 2025 DAAD Doctoral Scholarships

This scholarship program gives you the chance to carry out your doctoral studies in Germany. The funding for these scholarships comes from the German Federal Foreign Office.

Who is Eligible to Apply for the 2025 DAAD Doctoral Scholarships?

You are eligible to apply if you hold strong academic qualifications and have completed your Master’s degree or Diplom, or in special situations, your Bachelor’s degree. This must be done at the latest by the time the scholarship funding begins.

To apply for the 2025 DAAD Doctoral Scholarships, applicants need to fulfill these important conditions:

  1. Languages Needed: English or German.
  • If the program is international, the teaching language is English. In this case, applicants usually have to provide proof of English proficiency, like TOEFL or IELTS certificates.
  • For other programs where the instruction is in German, candidates typically must submit a German language certificate such as DSH or TestDaF.

What Does the Scholarship Support?

This program supports doctoral research carried out at either a public or officially recognized university or a non-university research institution in Germany. The funding can support:

  • An independent research project under the guidance of a university professor (doctoral advisor), or
  • Enrollment in a structured doctoral study program

In some cases, research conducted outside Germany may also be covered, but only if they are very important for finishing the doctoral research successfully. These stays must not take up more than one-fourth of the total funding duration.

You need to include detailed information about these planned stays in your study plan and timeline as part of your application documents (see ‘Application documents section below in this article’).
